In April 2017, the President of Haiti launched a competition for the reconstruction of the National Palace of Haiti which collapsed in the 2010 earthquake. The brief called for a building similar to Architect Georges Baussan’s 1915 Palace.
How does one preserve something that is no longer there? This is the challenge that our team addressed in our design proposal for the National Palace of Haiti. To copy the old, is to render a great disservice to the history of our country. To copy the old is to pretend that January 12th 2010 never happened in Haiti’s history. Rather than rebuild a replica of Baussan’s 1915 Palace, our aim was to bring Baussan’s Palace to the 21st century.
